Aside from digital and traditional art, embroidery is another way I love to express my creativity. It allows me to add a unique touch to my clothing, and makes as a great personal gift for friends and family. Over the past few years, I have embroidered many different things; jeans, shirts, work aprons, towels, pot holders... if it's cloth within the kitchen or the laundry room, there's a high likelyhood that I've taken needle and thread to it. Below are exmaples of the work I've done; some for others, and some for myself.
This was one of my very first embroidery projects. I was telling my old boss at Hy-Vee Floral about how I enjoyed embroidering, and she said that I should embroider my apron... so I did. I received many compliments on it, and thoroughly enjoyed the project itself. I also love that it adds a bit of personal touch to it, without standing out too much.
This kitchen towel was a gift to a family friend for her birthday. She has a heart of gold, but the vocabulary of a sailor. This phrase is an inside joke that stems from her mishearing her husband saying the words "You should ask...", so now we use this to get each others' attention, and it always gets a good giggle out of everyone.
These flares were made from a combination of hand sewing and embroidery. I had tried on this pair of jeans at Plato's Closet, and they fit like a dream... however, they were skinny jeans. For as long as I can remember, I've hated the feeling and the look of skinny jeans on myself. So, rather than passing up on the deal and a pair of perfectly fitting jeans, I decided to use some spare fabric I had to make a flare leg out of them. I get compliments on it every time I wear them out, and they are very comfortable as well.
After these pants developed a rip in the top just under the waistline, I decided to hand sew a few pieces of fabric together over top of the rip, and add a design to the fabric to make it more unique and fun. This was one of the first embroidery projects I had, so it took some trial and error, but I enjoyed the project and love how it turned out.
In addition to the embroidery work I have done, I also like to use the embroidery thread I own to create bracelets out of, since it comes in many colors and is relatively inexpensive. I mostly make them for myself, but have done some as gifts for others as well.
