Universal Kempo Karate has its origins in traditional Chinese Kempo Karate, which combines the realistic aspects of karate, judo, jujitsu, grappling, weapons, and boxing arts. The Shaolin monks of China were known for creating a workable method of physical and spiritual fitness to unify the mind and body, a tactic the Universal Kempo adopted.
Universal was founded in 1981 by Grandmaster Martin Buell. Grandmaster Buell (1942-2023) was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. From 1953 to the time of his passing, he trained in and taught martial arts. Grandmaster's legacy lives on in the vast network of karate schools across the United States and continues to spread throughout the entire world. Many generations of students are continuing to be developed.
Without philosophy, Martial Arts would be little more than street fighting. Through Martial Arts, students become more confident and develop an attitude of self-resiliance. Each student will be exposed to the following over the course of their training:
Almighty and Eternal God, Protector of all who put their trust in Thee. Accept the humble homage of our faith and love in Thee, the one true God. Bless our efforts to preserve the integrity of our United States, a nation founded on Chrisitan principles. Enlighten our rules and guide our lawmakers. Protect the sanctity of our homes and bless our efforts in these exercises, whose sole purpose is developing our bodies to keep others mindful of Thy commandments. Give us perserverance in our acrions that we may use this as a means to keep closer to you, the one true God. In the name of Thy beloved Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
