Do not put yourself in situations that could lead to a self-defense scenario. But if you have to fight, then fight, and always be aware of your surroundings. You never know if there is more than one attacker.

To escape, hit their elbows up from underneath to hyperextend them and loosen their grip. Then, reach up high and smash their arms, further breaking their hold. Push them away and run, while scanning for other potential assailants.
