Self defense doesn't havae to be complicated. In fact, many of the best defenses are simple. The best defense is to not be there. Do not put yourself in situations that could lead to a self-defense scenario. But if you have to fight, then fight, and always be aware of your surroundings. You never know if there is more than one attacker.

Soft tissue is the best option. The eyes, throat, ears, and groin are optimal targets in self-defense situations. In self-defense, there is no such thing as fighting dirty.

Here are a few simple defenses to get an assailants hands off of you:

Escape and Control 1

When an attacker grabs you, the most important thing is to get their hands off you. Imagine an assailant grabs both of your shoudlers. To escape, hit their elbows up from underneath to hyperextend them and loosen their grip. Then, reach up high and smash their arms, further breaking their hold. Push them away and run, while scanning for other potential assailants.

Basic Grab 1

This defense is similar to Escape and Control 1. magine an assailant grabs both of your shoudlers. To escape, hit their elbows up from underneath to hyperextend them and loosen their grip, but control their elbows from underneath. While you have their arms controled, place a left/right front kick to their groin to stun them. Then, reach up high and smash their arms, further breaking their hold. Push them away and run, while scanning for other potential assailants.

Wrist Controls

When an attacker grabs one of your wrists, there are three simple moves you can do to break their hold.

Push: Use your free hand to hit their arm and push it away, while pulling your trapped arm quickly to your body.
Peel: Grab their thumb and peel it away from your wrist (like peeling a bannana), and rotate your wrist as if you are checking the time on a watch.
Rotate: "Scoop icecream, miss your mouth, and make a muscle." Yep, it's exactly like it sounds. Pretend you are getting a big scoop of icecream with an imaginary spoon and bring it to your mouth. But as you bring it to your mouth, you miss, extending past your head and flex to your friends. This will effectively break their hold on your wrist.

Escape

In all cases, if you can, get away. Do the least amount possible to escape.

Control

If you cannot escape, or you have someone with you, control the situation. Maintain control of the assaultant until the authorities arrive.

Destroy

In the worse case scenario, such as if the assaultant produces a weapon or you are with someone who cannot escape, such as an elderly person or a small child, you have to hurt or maim the assaultant.

Being in a situation that requires self-defense is scary! But it is crucial that you do not freeze in those situations. A moment of hesitation can mean the difference between life and death. Having some sort of self-defense knowledge in your arsenal can be vital to your survival or the survival of your loved ones.
